“64-year-old Man in Taichung Falls into Poison Trap due to ‘MetaMask Frequent Blinking’ Misjudgment, Disbelieving He Could be Deceived”

A 64-year-old man surnamed Ye in Taichung City almost fell victim to an online scam, guided by his friend. MetaMask, also known as “Fox Wallet,” has recently become a tool used by scammers to deceive middle-aged and elderly people, leading those unfamiliar with blockchain applications to fall into the trap of zero U address poisoning (zero transfer attack).

According to reports, Mr. Ye started to get involved in cryptocurrency trading based on a friend’s recommendation. He downloaded the widely-used “Fox Wallet” (MetaMask) but encountered a series of failed transactions during the investment process. After exporting more than 100,000 yuan, Mr. Ye decided to follow his friend’s suggestion and open an online banking account at a bank.

During the process of applying for an online banking account, it was initially claimed that he needed to invest in stocks, but the bank employee noticed that he was using the “Fox Wallet” (MetaMask).

The bank employee noticed that the “Fox Wallet” (MetaMask) application used by Mr. Ye was constantly flashing abnormally, suspecting that he had been targeted by scammers. Therefore, they quickly informed the police.

Officer Peng Wenjun and Wu Junhao from the Third Police Station immediately rushed to the scene after receiving the report. Although Mr. Ye initially insisted that he would not be fooled, further investigation by the police revealed that he may have fallen into the trap of a fraud group.

Although “Fox Wallet” (MetaMask) is commonly used for cryptocurrency transactions, recent illegal activities have involved creating fake transaction addresses through technology, thereby transferring funds to the fraudster’s account (also known as zero U address poisoning or zero transfer attack).

The police remind the public to remain highly vigilant when faced with seemingly attractive high-yield investment opportunities. All investments carry risks, especially in the emerging and ever-changing field of cryptocurrency. Before engaging in any transactions, careful evaluation and research should be conducted, and professional advice should be sought if necessary. If there are any doubts, assistance can be sought by dialing the “165” anti-fraud hotline.
