Worldcoin|World ID 2.0 Enhances Login Verification and Strengthens Privacy Security
According to an announcement by Worldcoin, the decentralized identity (DID) project World ID has launched its 2.0 update. This update provides support for third-party verification on applications such as Telegram, Discord, and Minecraft, and also introduces different levels of verification, removing the requirement for everyone to scan their irises. The update aims to improve the user experience and bring about the first practical application scenario of World ID – login verification.

The success of World ID depends on the size of the ecosystem rather than the technology
World ID is part of the Worldcoin project, which aims to provide a unified decentralized identity system to assist people without digital accounts in using online products and reduce the friction of existing verification systems. Worldcoin consists of three key products:
World ID: a decentralized identity (DID) project that previously provided users with unique identities through iris scanning. It is the core product of the project, with approximately 2.6 million people having completed iris registration.
World APP: a decentralized cryptocurrency wallet app that provides users with key pairs to connect with their World ID registrations and serves as the client for the future identity system.
World Coin (WLD): a token that incentivizes users to register for World ID, with a total supply of 10 billion tokens planned to be distributed to 1 billion people. The team and investors hold approximately 25% of the tokens.
Essentially, these are commonly seen DID, wallet, and token products in the industry. However, due to the backing of OpenAI founder Sam Altman, the project has gained more attention and resources. As a decentralized identity product emphasizing ecosystem and cross-industry collaboration, World ID has unique advantages.
However, there have been controversies in the community regarding concerns over iris scanning security, trafficking of fake accounts, and contradictions in token distribution mechanisms and philosophies.
Now, with the World ID 2.0 update, some of these issues will be addressed, and login verification services will be introduced. The main updates include:
Providing diverse application verification services
Leveling verification requirements
Enhanced security and operability
World ID can now be used for login verification on some products. The value of decentralized identity lies in its usability. The more products or services it can be used for, the more useful the decentralized identity becomes, attracting more users to apply for it. Therefore, business development and ecosystem expansion are the most important goals for World ID.
The World ID team has released verification plugins for popular applications, including Discord, Reddit, Minecraft, Telegram, and Shopify, allowing platform administrators to choose to support World ID verification.
For example, Telegram group administrators can choose to add a chat bot that supports World ID verification to the group, requiring members to use World ID for login before participating in conversations. Minecraft server administrators can use plugins that support World ID verification as an alternative whitelist design.
Users only need to use the World APP to complete the above verification process, which may involve scanning QR codes or directly signing, with zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP) ensuring that user data is not leaked during login.
Complete supported applications can be found on the official website.
World ID 2.0 provides multi-level identities to meet different usage scenarios. Currently, only a few people have completed Orb machine scans to register for World ID. If the existing iris scanning registration standard is maintained for the aforementioned verification services, it would be inconvenient for most users who have not yet registered (regardless of privacy concerns or the limited availability of Orb scanning registration locations).
Therefore, World ID 2.0 aims to reduce verification requirements and cater to more diverse usage scenarios by offering various levels of verification. For example, the verification requirements for games are not as high as those for financial services, and different products can be customized based on their needs.
World ID 2.0 is divided into three identity levels:
World ID Device: Allows users to verify their identities using mobile devices to obtain this level of identity.
World ID Orb: Similar to World ID 1.0, this level requires verification of uniqueness and biological activity through trusted iris scanning machines (Orbs) to obtain World ID Orb status.
World ID Orb+: The strictest identity level, in addition to iris scanning, also requires facial recognition verification, which occurs locally on the user’s mobile device.
World ID 2.0 includes several optimizations in account security and operability, including:
Changing/deleting World ID: If a user’s World ID is stolen, they can re-register, and users can also delete iris information at any time (lowering the identity verification level) to maintain privacy.
Personal Custody: By using user devices, a self-custody feature is added (including facial recognition information for World ID Orb+ level) and the official custody data scheme is eliminated, enhancing user data security and privacy.
Support for OIDC and OAuth 2.0 protocols: World ID will be able to support third-party account login mechanisms similar to “FB, Google,” etc.
Wallet Bridge: An open-source protocol that optimizes the process and efficiency of wallet signature login to external services.
With this update, we finally see the application of DID beyond token issuance. World ID 2.0 basically amplifies the service of DID user login verification and serves as its first real use case.
We also see the team’s emphasis on privacy and the adjustments made to address concerns. However, the most important aspect of decentralized identity is its “application value,” which requires a sufficient number of applications to respond and support in order to have an impact. For example, there needs to be more Discord administrators choosing to use this method of verification, or more applications making World ID the default third-party login option for it to be useful.
Currently, it seems that World ID is still laying the foundation, and after overcoming product design and technical challenges, the team’s biggest challenge will be how to expand the ecosystem.
There is still a long way to go for World ID to be integrated practically by various products and vendors.
