Vodafone seeks integration of encrypted wallet and blockchain technology into mobile SIM card
According to a report by Cointelegraph, UK telecommunications provider Vodafone hopes to bring blockchain technology to smartphone users by integrating cryptocurrency wallets with Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards, which we are familiar with.
In a recent interview with Yahoo Finance’s Future Focus program, David Palmer, Vodafone’s head of blockchain, discussed the company’s plans to integrate blockchain technology into SIM cards for smartphones:
“We are focused on linking SIM cards with digital identities and connecting SIM cards with blockchain, and then integrating these encryption technologies into SIM cards.”
Palmer predicts that by 2023, there will be 8 billion smartphones, and by 2030, the number of cryptocurrency wallets will increase dramatically to 5.6 billion, accounting for nearly 70% of the global population. He also emphasizes that the platform can facilitate seamless transactions between public blockchains like Ethereum and private blockchains, as well as provide decentralized digital identities for Internet of Things devices.
Earlier this year, Vodafone established a strategic partnership with Microsoft for a period of 10 years. Vodafone will invest $1.5 billion over the next 10 years in cloud and customer-centric artificial intelligence services developed with Microsoft, while Microsoft will leverage Vodafone’s fixed and mobile communication services.
Following the announcement of this deal, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took the opportunity to promote the disruptive nature of his company’s AI technology, claiming that the next generation of AI will bring tremendous new opportunities for every organization and industry.
