Vitalik: GPT4 Successfully Passes the Turing Test – A Reminder Worth Noting

Vitalik expressed his views on the recent GPT4 Turing test results, stating that the accuracy is not the main point. The milestone is that artificial intelligence has surpassed the notion of being useless. It is important to remember this going forward.

Background: What is the Turing Test?
Vitalik believes that GPT4 has passed the Turing test.
The Turing test refers to a test where a computer provides language-based responses to humans. If humans cannot distinguish whether the responses are from a human or a computer, then the language model has passed the Turing test.
Although the Turing test does not constitute a necessary or sufficient condition for defining intelligence, it is still an interesting benchmark in the industry.

As Oxford University philosopher Toby Ord said, “While no one believes that AI symbolizes intelligence, the process of studying its victory over human players in international Go competitions is still very interesting.”
Compared to other benchmark tests that focus on single-dimensional abilities, such as the ability to play Go or a specific video game, the Turing test is more versatile. Universality is one of the key aspects of testing AI, and it cannot be verified by adding more and more single tests. The Turing test is an important standard for verifying this question.

Vitalik seems to be very interested in AI and expressed his views on whether GPT4 has passed the Turing test. Vitalik believes that although the current human probability of correctly identifying GPT4 in the Turing test is only 54%, this number is already significant in real life. Vitalik believes that GPT4 has passed the Turing test.
In the current GPT4 Turing test, the probability of humans being guessed as humans is 66%, while the probability of computers being identified as humans is 54%. Vitalik believes that the 12% difference is small, and this ratio is already close to the probability of “flipping a coin and getting heads or tails.”
Vitalik stated, “The Turing test is a milestone, and the significance behind it is that AI is no longer useless. It is best to always remember that we have already crossed this milestone in the world.”
