Why is Ethereum Cancun Upgrade (Dencun) Anticipated?
This Ethereum upgrade includes Dencun, Proto-danksharding/ EIP-4844, and other upgrades. Proto-danksharding will introduce a new compressed data storage mechanism called “blob” to reduce transaction costs on L2, making data availability cheaper. It also addresses scalability issues. Considering the rapid growth of L2, this upgrade is seen as an important part of the ecosystem roadmap.
The Cancun upgrade is expected to launch the third testnet, Holesky, on February 7th, with the final Ethereum mainnet upgrade expected at the end of the first quarter.
