Progress in the case of the murder of UnitedHealth CEO: Luigi Mangione New York hearing attracts a large number of supporters rallying.
New York is currently experiencing sub-zero temperatures, but the hearing for Luigi Mangione, who is charged with the murder of the CEO of United Health Insurance last year, drew a large crowd outside the courthouse. The winter chill could not deter numerous fans and supporters from rallying behind Luigi. Luigi (named after the brother in Super Mario) has become a hero to the American public, his name being remembered more than that of the murdered CEO.
According to CNN, one attendee arrived at the courthouse as early as 5 a.m. Eastern Time, hoping to witness the court proceedings firsthand. A large group of supporters outside waved various flags bearing slogans such as “Free Luigi” and “Healthcare is a Human Right.” Posters of other health insurance executives were also seen near the courthouse, each marked with “Wanted,” indicating an intense public disdain for private health insurance companies in the U.S.
Live Coverage of the Hearing
At the hearing held in New York on Friday, many attendees were young women crowded in the hallways, eager to secure one of the public seats in the courtroom. Luigi Mangione has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on 11 counts, including one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder, along with other weapons and forgery charges. The Manhattan District Attorney stated that if convicted, Luigi would face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The courtroom for the hearing was the same as that used for President Trump’s criminal trial regarding hush money payments, where prosecutors reviewed evidence submitted to the defense. Evidence includes recordings from police body cameras, police reports, surveillance footage, discarded phone data from the crime scene, autopsy reports, forensic files, and forensic DNA testing materials. Prosecutors indicated that more evidence still needs to be handed over to Luigi’s legal team.
Outside the courthouse, a large crowd of supporters donned “Free Luigi” scarves and sweaters, chanting “Healthcare is a Human Right” and holding banners proclaiming “We Are All Luigi.” The commotion outside was seen as an emotional outlet for those who have long suffered at the hands of health insurance companies.
The day before the hearing, Luigi’s portrait was projected onto the side of a building in New York City, accompanied by the words “Free Luigi.” The anonymous group responsible for the projection told CNN that they created it to emphasize that Luigi Mangione deserves a fair trial, a right that every citizen should have, regardless
