Hong Kong SFC and Police Issue Warning against Virtual Asset Scam Operating under the Name of Exchange MEXC

2/9, the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong, together with the police, issued a public warning, stating that an institution operating under the name “MEXC” is suspected of conducting virtual asset-related fraud. The institution claims to be a Virtual Asset Trading Platform (VATP), a regulated virtual asset platform in Hong Kong, which has raised high concerns from regulatory authorities and the police.

(This fraudulent platform is not related to the legitimate MEXC, it is only using the same name for fraud)

Preventive Measures and Reminders by SFC
SFC and the police have conducted intelligence sharing on this case through a joint task force dedicated to monitoring and investigating illegal activities of virtual asset trading platforms. MEXC is suspected of luring victims through social media and instant messaging chat groups, under the guise of providing free investment advice.

In these chat groups, victims who are interested in purchasing cryptocurrencies are directed to a website operated by MEXC. Before making any investments, victims are asked to deposit funds into designated bank accounts, but later find that they are unable to withdraw their funds.

On February 9, 2024, SFC listed MEXC and its website on the alert list for suspicious virtual asset trading platforms, and the police took measures to block the MEXC website. However, the public should remain vigilant as MEXC may continue to create websites with similar domain names.

SFC once again reminds the public to exercise caution regarding “too good to be true” investment opportunities and advice posted on social media platforms and instant messaging applications. Unauthorized platforms often use names similar to legitimate entities to confuse investors, and investors should maintain a high level of caution when making investment decisions.

MEXC claims to be a VATP and operates the following websites:
