OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Search Instant Search Feature Posing New Challenge to Google
OpenAI recently launched a new feature in ChatGPT aimed at allowing users to search for information in real time, which is seen as a direct challenge to Google.
ChatGPT Search Focuses on “Searchable Real-Time Information”
On October 31, OpenAI introduced the new feature ChatGPT Search, an evolved version of the prototype SearchGPT released in July 2023. At that time, SearchGPT operated separately from the ChatGPT application and was only available for testing by a limited number of users. The new feature of ChatGPT Search emphasizes “searchable real-time information,” and responses will include citations from news publishers and other data sources embedded within the responses, allowing users to see the sources or reference materials. ChatGPT Search will initially be available to paid users of ChatGPT Plus and Team, covering both mobile and web versions. Business and educational customers will gain access in the coming weeks, while free users will have to wait several months, with hopes of reaching 250 million users weekly to provide a similar AI search experience.
“Conversational Queries” Enhance Experience by Rapidly Integrating Data
OpenAI’s media director, Varun Shetty, indicated that users often need to conduct multiple searches or click on various links to find answers online. Shetty added that using “conversational queries” along with relevant background information and high-quality sources would improve the search experience. During a demonstration of the feature, the OpenAI team used ChatGPT Search to look for weekend activities in San Francisco, and ChatGPT promptly compiled a list of events provided by local news websites. When asked for restaurant recommendations, ChatGPT showcased a food map of local restaurants, making the sources and previews of information more apparent.
Collaboration with Multiple Authoritative Media Ensures Diverse Information Sources
To launch ChatGPT Search, OpenAI collaborated with several media companies, including News Corp., Axel Springer SE, TIME, and Le Monde. These partnerships allow OpenAI to incorporate authoritative, real-time information into ChatGPT Search and adjust article selection methods and summary lengths based on feedback from media partners. Shetty stated that any website or publisher can choose to appear in ChatGPT Search and that there would be no preference for media publishers that collaborate with the company. Shetty further noted that ChatGPT Search is not limited to hard news and can provide more diverse information, aiming to be particularly useful for those seeking information beyond pure news reporting.
“Generating Incorrect Answers” Remains a Classic Issue that AI Providers Must Address
However, like all generative AI products, OpenAI’s AI search tool also faces the risk of generating incorrect answers. Reports indicated that in a pre-recorded demonstration video of SearchGPT released in July, an error was noted regarding the date of a certain holiday. For OpenAI and its competitors, providing accurate information during the upcoming U.S. elections is of utmost importance. OpenAI also stated that starting from election day, if users inquire about voting results using ChatGPT, a message will be generated encouraging them to check news sources such as the Associated Press and Reuters, as well as information from their state or local election commissions, to ensure they receive more accurate election information.
OpenAI’s Future Vision: Expanding Globally and Introducing Advertising Exploration
Recently, OpenAI’s Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar mentioned in an interview at the Money 20/20 conference that the goal is to ensure more people worldwide have access to AI tools. In addition to the newly launched ChatGPT Search focusing on “searchable real-time information,” commercial advertising will be introduced soon to meet diverse user needs while increasing profitability.
