Bitcoin Donation Helps WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Return to Australia
Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, has regained his freedom after 14 years of legal battles and 1,901 days of incarceration. An anonymous Bitcoin enthusiast donated over 8 bitcoins, valued at approximately $500,000, to assist Assange’s family in settling debts incurred from chartering flights to North Mariana Islands and Australia.
Previously:
Julian Assange departed a UK prison, poised to regain freedom after plea agreement.
On June 24th, Assange was released from a UK prison and boarded a chartered flight from London to North Mariana Islands, where his plea agreement took effect in court.
Stella Assange, his wife, remarked in an interview, “Freedom comes with a cost.” Assange was “compelled” to charter Flight VJ199 to North Mariana Islands and Australia, incurring a $520,000 debt owed to the Australian government.
According to CryptoSlate, an anonymous donor contributed 8.07 bitcoins (approximately $500,000), the largest single donation to the fund, surpassing all other currency donations combined. Additionally, through the Free Julian Assange crowdfunding page, they sought fiat currency donations, gathering support from 9,020 contributors, raising $410,000.
Assange has finally returned to Australia a free man, receiving a hero’s welcome. Stella expressed gratitude to all supporters:
“This required millions, it required people behind the scenes, it required people on the streets protesting. After days, weeks, months, and years, we finally did it!”
