AMD’s Latest MI355 Achieves 35-Fold Performance Increase! Su Zifeng: AI Market to Exceed $500 Billion Within Three Years.
AMD CEO Lisa Su Announces Launch of Next-Generation AI Accelerator MI350 Series
On June 12, Lisa Su, CEO of American chip giant AMD, announced at a conference in California that the latest generation of AI accelerator, the MI350 series, has been officially launched. The performance not only surpasses previous generations of products but also competes with Nvidia’s popular products, the B200 and GB200, in certain AI applications. She further adjusted market forecasts, stating that the AI chip market size is expected to exceed $500 billion within three years.
MI355 Chip Performance Soars 35 Times, AMD Striving to Catch Up with NVIDIA
Lisa Su announced that the next-generation AI accelerator chip, the MI355, began shipping this month, with performance skyrocketing by 35 times compared to previous generations. It operates AI software faster than Nvidia’s B200 and GB200, and can match their performance in model training, with a possibility of surpassing them.
More importantly, the MI355 is priced significantly lower than its competitors, which can help enterprises build AI infrastructure at a lower cost. Lisa Su stated:
“This is the starting point for AMD to catch up with NVIDIA!”
AI Chip Market Aiming to Break $500 Billion, AMD’s Ambition is High but Stock Prices Decline
Lisa Su revised the AI chip market forecast, believing that the market size is expected to exceed $500 billion within the next three years, reaching this milestone much faster than her previous target set for 2028. She remarked:
“In the past, everyone thought this number was large; now it seems just a basic figure.”
However, market reaction has been conservative, with AMD’s stock price dropping by 2.2% after the announcement, closing at $118.50.
Next Generation MI400 Chip in Collaboration with OpenAI Set to Launch Next Year, U.S. Export Restrictions Still Need to Be Overcome
Lisa Su also previewed that the next-generation MI400 chip series will be launched in 2026, revealing that this MI400 is developed in collaboration with OpenAI. CEO Sam Altman even endorsed it on stage, expressing disbelief upon first seeing the specifications.
However, AMD is still subject to U.S. export policy restrictions and requires permission to ship to China. Currently, Lisa Su is actively lobbying the Trump administration to ease these restrictions and has successfully secured a deal for a Saudi Arabia order approved by the White House. She emphasized that the U.S. should allow the free export of chips to maintain its dominant position in global AI technology.
