Vitalik Praises Prediction Markets and Community Notes as Two Prominent Cognitive Technologies Musk Also Agrees
Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, praised the prediction market and community notes in a recent post, and Elon Musk also responded with approval.
Vitalik praised the prediction market and community notes, stating that they are two flagship social cognitive technologies of the 2020s. Both technologies aim for truth and democracy, based on open public participation rather than pre-selected elites. Vitalik expressed his desire to see more of such things.
Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, also expressed his endorsement of Vitalik’s tweet.
Vitalik further added that he believes prediction markets and community notes complement each other. The only major criticism of community notes is that they update too slowly, while prediction markets can motivate people to predict information that will emerge later and strive to reveal it as quickly as possible.
Vitalik has expressed his love for projects such as Polymarket and ENS domains multiple times. Polymarket, in particular, has seen a surge in active users and trading volume, setting new records, fueled by the excitement surrounding the recent US election.
Polymarket raised $45 million in Series B funding in May, with investors including Peter Thiel and Vitalik.
According to Dune Analytics, after the funding, Polymarket attracted nearly 30,000 active users per month, and the trading volume in June exceeded $110 million, both reaching historic highs.
Most of Polymarket’s activities are currently driven by election predictions. “Who will win the 2024 presidential election” is the most liquid prediction market on the platform, with over $206.6 million in bets.
Yuga Cohler, a senior engineering manager at Coinbase, recently tweeted that mainstream media constantly references Polymarket to gauge election probabilities, which is a milestone for cryptocurrencies. He also highlighted that Polymarket, built using cryptographic technology, serves as a fortress against “manufactured consensus” and “misinformation,” a market fit that goes unnoticed.
