Vitalik Buterin: The Ethereum era of technical orientation has passed, the focus of the next decade is on practical L2 applications.
Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, attended the Pragma London Summit organized by ETH Global on March 14. He called on the Ethereum community to shift their thinking and focus on building decentralized applications and solutions based on Layer 2 (L2) technology. After the completion of the London hard fork upgrade, L2 scaling solutions will play a more important role.
According to Cointelegraph, Vitalik emphasized the importance of the London upgrade, which significantly reduces the cost of submitting proofs to the Ethereum mainnet for L2 Rollup, enabling scalability. He stated that the upgrade allows the Ethereum ecosystem to move away from a Layer 1-centric model. The development stage of the Ethereum mainnet is currently in a slowing phase, shifting from rapid updates to a focus on maintenance. However, this does not diminish the importance of Ethereum as a foundational layer, as it will still be the basis for L2.
Vitalik highlighted advancements in the L1 field, such as zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP), which provide privacy protection for users and make it easier to build DApps on L2. Compared to five years ago, the difficulty of building such applications has significantly decreased.
Looking ahead to the next decade of Ethereum, Vitalik noted that the first ten years were focused on internal development, primarily for product development within the ecosystem. However, the next ten years will require significant changes in development methods to have a major impact on the internet and traditional financial systems.
Vitalik expressed the expectation that a L2-oriented mindset should dominate in the future, with a focus on application developers.
