Gold Bull Peter Schiff Celebrates 62nd Birthday: Publicly Shares “Strategic Reserve” Address and Accepts BTC Donations

Peter Schiff’s Ironic Call for Bitcoin Donations on His 62nd Birthday

Peter Schiff, a well-known economic commentator who has always been critical of Bitcoin, publicly declared on his 62nd birthday that he would not accept traditional birthday gifts. Instead, he chose to make an ironic call for Bitcoin donations to fund his self-created “Bitcoin Strategic Reserve”.

Irony Towards U.S. Bitcoin Strategic Reserve, Calling Himself a “True HODLer”

Recently, Schiff announced on X that he had moved his Bitcoin from exchanges to a cold wallet, establishing a Bitcoin reserve in a budget-neutral way. He further stated that he would not personally purchase Bitcoin to increase the reserve. This move is a satirical take on the “Bitcoin Strategic Reserve” concept recently proposed by the U.S. government.

For transparency, I moved my Strategic Bitcoin Reserve from an exchange to a hardware wallet. Today is my 62nd birthday. To build my reserve in a budget-neutral way, just like the U.S. government, in lieu of gifts, I’m accepting Bitcoin.

As of now, this “strategic reserve” has raised over $4,500, mainly through small Bitcoin donations. Despite Schiff’s long-standing skepticism and criticism towards Bitcoin, he claimed that this time he was “seriously coexisting with Bitcoin as a HODLer.”

Continues to Stand by Gold Standard, Criticizes Government Misallocation of Resources

Previously, Schiff had openly opposed any form of cryptocurrency strategic reserve, including those proposed by the Trump administration. He firmly believes that reserves should be strengthened with physical assets like gold or oil, rather than virtual assets. On a post dated March 7, he stated:

A country investing more funds into cryptocurrencies is essentially reducing capital investment in the production of physical goods and real wealth creation. Encouraging or subsidizing this resource waste is one of the worst decisions a government can make.

He also criticized the current close relationship between the U.S. government and the cryptocurrency industry, specifically naming the Trump family’s involvement in crypto projects. He even called the White House’s recent cryptocurrency summit a “national disgrace”.

Contradictions and Irony in His Donation Campaign

Now, responding to netizens who questioned his “wavering gold bull stance” and accused him of “begging for Bitcoin”, Schiff replied:

This is not a donation for me personally, but for this strategic reserve. I have no intention of selling these Bitcoins.

When someone humorously stated, “Selling gold to buy Bitcoin is true fiscal neutrality,” Schiff countered:

No, I have to exchange gold for Bitcoin. Gold is money, whereas Bitcoin is just a digital collectible and is not rare.

Although this action may seem contrary to his past stance, Schiff emphasized that it was a form of “critical participation”, aiming to mock the government’s misallocation of resources by establishing a “Strategic Bitcoin Reserve”.

Whether or not Schiff genuinely embraces Bitcoin, his actions have indeed sparked considerable discussion and attention within the crypto community.
